Meet the family! My Norwich are my second breed, I used to show/breed Miniature Schnauzers. I have had several AKC Champion Miniature Schnauzers. My miniature schnauzers have been retired, altered and placed in pet homes. When we get puppies its like Christmas all over again because it's so far between litters. Since our dogs travel with us when we go north to do hay and take care of the cows for the summer, it's easier with just a few.
My husband, 3 children and dogs, cows and horses live in Southeastern Idaho, where we can breath clean air and look out our window and see the beautiful Teton Mountain range. We live in the desert, surrounded by BLM land, our closest neighbor is 1/4 mile away, and there is almost no traffic! My husband is a rancher/farmer, as were many generations before him. I am the extra hand/cook/go-pher/driver whatever-I-can-do person. Our kids help all they can, even though they are still young and sometimes have a hard time seeing over the steering wheels, reaching the clutch or keeping the cows going in the right direction. BaLei and Cache can operate every peice of equipment on the place, something we're very proud of. Paige Victoria joined our family November 4th, 2008. I quit my office job to stay home with my family in 2004. Besides helping my husband and raising the kids, I raise and sell calves or heifers as my main "job". This is what supports my dog habit! This is the best job I've ever had as I am an outside girl!! I enjoy the individuality of animals, whether they are large or small. We enjoy having pups, watching them grow and develop, and of course showing them off. I enjoy getting to visit with people and brag up my babies. Whenever friends have pups, of course we have to go see them! And, I enjoy getting updates on the puppies whenever it's possible. I am very pleased with the dogs I have purchased over time, to start my own line with. I am a die hard terrier girl, I cringe when we get a new puppy or dog of the ranch variety, they usually aren't as willing to please, quick to learn, they SHED, and I pull my hair out trying to house train them, they are just NOT a terrier and don't have the mentality or intelligence of a terrier (all our dogs are house trained, the mutt stock dogs, my studs, all my girls). I feel that the 2-3 litters we get each year are well worth the work and sacrifice that goes into them. I am pleased to offer a quality pup that is within the AKC standard, at an affordable price, to the right families.
Please understand I do not breed for a profit. My tax man laughs every year as I have yet to make a "profit" on my dogs, he thinks I'm doing it the wrong way! The money from my pups, goes towards the care and maintenance of my adults, the costs incurred in the process of raising the pups, new toys, new clothes (for the dogs), any new breeding/show dogs I may purchase, and of course the expense of showing! I could breed every single one of my girls starting at 6 months of age, every heat cycle, keep breeding them until they can't produce pups anymore, not show, purchase lesser quality dogs to add to my breeding program (or better yet, keep most of my own girls!) and THEN I would make money, that would also make me a puppymill or backyard breeder. That goes completely against my character. When my girls or boys are retired, or if I decide not to breed them at all, if they are not staying here with us, I will rehome them after they are altered. Some breeders either euthanize their breeding dogs or take them to the vet, pay for the spay/nueter and have the vet find them a home, they don't know/don't care where they end up at. The breeders that are out there not showing their dogs (yet they claim to have show quality), the breeders that have multiple litters due each month, that have a bunch of breeding bitches, and that sell full registration to whomever has the money to pay their inflated price, they are only doing it for the money. Did you know there are alot of breeders that supervise the whelping of their pups only with cameras, or leave them with their kennel help??? I can't imagine missing the birth of my puppies, or watching it on a video screen! When we have pups due, I am home, for 2 weeks, a week before the pups are due, and a week after they are born, they are not left unattended EVER. They sleep right next to our bedroom, with a baby monitor so I can hear whats going on in the night. My husband knows when my babies are due, he needs to find someone else to help him for that time!
Our kids are allowed to hold and play with the babies as much as they would like, as are any other kids/people that come over. Paige helps with the training on the show puppies/dogs as well as the pet puppies/dogs. She is also practicing to go into the ring for the first time. Maybe one day she will be MY handler! When your purchasing a puppy (any breed) and you have small kids, please be sure to ask the breeder if their pups have been exposed to kids, what ages the kids were, how much they were together and how the pup reacted to the kids. Going from a home with no kids to a home with kids can be scary for some pups/dogs, kids smell funny, they are loud and rough, it's too much for some dogs and they may bite or hide. A dog in a home with children needs to learn to respect kids and adults. Same goes for your kids, they have to be taught to respect pets, how to handle them and speak nice and soft with them until they are used to the kids. It goes much easier on everyone if the puppy/dog comes from a home with kids if it's going to a home with kids.
